René Lalique: The Genius of Light, A journey through time.

Some geniuses, through their visionary expertise, open up new perspectives in art and technology. Their legacy illuminates our world, leaving an indelible imprint on history and culture. Véronique Brumm Schaich offers us a fascinating insight into the world of René Lalique through her book René Lalique: The Genius of Light, published by Gallimard.

This avant-garde Art Nouveau artist, born in 1860, is distinguished by his bold designs, often inspired by nature. A renowned jeweler, he manipulates a variety of materials such as enamel, horn, ivory, and semi-precious stones. He also introduces glass into his jewelry, a groundbreaking choice that will mark his work indelibly. Lalique’s career takes on an international dimension during the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, where his talent shines through. This event marks a turning point that strengthens his reputation among the artistic elite. In 1925, the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris confirms his status as a master glassmaker. Lalique, now fully dedicated to glass, explores new techniques and materials, placing innovation at the heart of his work. Glass thus becomes his preferred material, allowing Lalique to revolutionize the art of jewelry and ornamentation. His geometric creations and new molding methods respond to a modern aesthetic, while aiming to democratize beauty. It is important to note that René Lalique initiated mass production. By making his works accessible to a wider audience, a goal he would pursue throughout his career.

However, he does not stop at creating for the pleasure of the eye. He receives prestigious orders for glass panels and luminaires for ships and trains, which are symbols of luxury and modernity. These special orders, combined with his mass production, establish the name of Lalique as a prestigious signature.

Véronique Brumm Schaich, historian and director of the Lalique Museum since its opening in 2011, guides us through this work with her expertise. A doctor of information and communication sciences, she has devoted numerous publications to the history of glass and René Lalique. Her book is a beautiful tribute to the man and artist, revealing the strength of his genius and his lasting influence on art and design.

René Lalique: The Genius of Light It invites us on an exciting journey through time, light and matter, where each page reveals a little more of the magic and ingenuity of René Lalique.
